Sharks rediscover form

The Sharks rediscovered their emphatic form of the early rounds of the Absa Currie Cup when they blew the Leopards off the park on Saturday in an exhilarating display of attacking rugby. The final score was 58 – 24. The game was played in blistering heat and when the match reached the three-quarter stage, the Sharks ran out of steam.

KZN premier to lead show of support for Zuma

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele has pledged to lead a delegation of top ANC leaders to support axed deputy president Jacob Zuma when he appears in court on October 11, the Sunday Times reports. Ndebele, a close ally of President Thabo Mbeki, has recently been under pressure from his mainly Zuma-supporting colleagues in the province, said the newspaper.

Bulls remain at top of the log

The Blue Bulls overcame a spirited Cheetahs side 26 -22 in Currie Cup premier division match in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Cheetahs flyhalf Willem de Waal did not put a boot wrong when he slotted six out of six kicks for a personal tally of 17 points, while Derick Hougaard bagged 16 points from four penalties and two conversions.

Gaza erupts as Israel strikes back at Hamas

Israeli aircraft blasted suspected Palestinian weapons facilities and other militant targets throughout the Gaza Strip on Sunday, at the launch of what the military said would be a ”prolonged” offensive against Hamas militants for bombarding
Israeli towns with rockets. A group of senior Israeli Cabinet officials, led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, approved the military operation in Gaza at an emergency meeting late on Saturday after Hamas militants fired nearly 40 rockets from Gaza at southern Israeli towns.

Rita brings rain

Rita is no longer a hurricane but is expected to produce ”torrential rains during the next few days,” the National Hurricane Centre said on Saturday. At 6pm GMT Rita’s wind strength had slackened to about 105km per hour, making her a tropical storm. The United States Energy Department said it expects ”minimal disruption” to oil supplies.
