Vote-counting in the Iraqi constitutional referendum should finish within two days, with an initial forecast possibly available at that time, senior electoral official Farid Ayyar said. Meanwhile, mortar rounds landed early on Sunday within the heavily protected Green Zone in Baghdad.

Rail commuters had to be evacuated on Saturday when three motor coaches and three trailers were vandalised and burnt at a station in Springs, Metrorail said. "The management will work with the South African Police Service to put an end to this criminal activity," said Metrorail spokesperson Thandi Mlangeni.

Iraqis voted in force on Saturday on a draft Constitution that turns another page on the ousted regime of Saddam Hussein as insurgents evaded a massive security clampdown to kill four people. About 15,5-million Iraqis had a chance to vote on the charter, which lays out a democratic framework for a new Iraq.

Pakistan said on Saturday the death toll from the region’s massive earthquake has reached 38 000 people, a jump of 13 000, with about 3,3-million people homeless ahead of the Himalayan winter. The October 8 earthquake also ravaged the Indian side of divided Kashmir, killing 1 329 people there.

Pumas fullback Casper Steyn completed a perfect kicking display to spur his team to a 25-16 victory over the Falcons in the final of the Currie Cup first division at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Friday night. New Zealand won the first Standard Bank one-day international against South Africa A at Willowmoore Park on Friday, after rain and lightning stopped play after 43 overs. When the match was called off, South Africa A, chasing 273 for victory, had 199 for four. New Zealand won the match by 19 runs according to the Duckworth-Lewis formula.
