Judge sends US drug cheats to jail

Two men at the centre of one of the sporting world’s largest drug scandals were sentenced to prison terms on Tuesday by a United States federal court judge on Tuesday. Judge Susan Illston sentenced Victor Conte, founder of Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (Balco), and Greg Anderson, who served as a personal trainer to Barry Bonds, to penalties of four months and three months in jail respectively.

Mbeki, Zuma to submit report on ANC unity

President Thabo Mbeki and former deputy president Jacob Zuma are to submit a joint report within a week on the rift threatening the African National Congress. ”It’s about the unity of the movement and dealing with current developments within the ANC,” party spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said on Tuesday.

Honda unveils hydrogen fuel-cell concept car

Honda unveiled a new hydrogen-powered fuel-cell concept car on Wednesday which runs on a refueling unit that also supplies electricity and hot water for the home. The FCX concept uses the home energy station, which generates hydrogen from natural gas supplied to households, Honda said as it unveiled the vehicle at a press preview at the Tokyo Motor Show east of the capital.

Second investor signs up for Coega

The Coega Development Corporation has secured its second investment — a R1,6-billion stainless steel precision mill that is part of the offset from the multibillion-rand arms deal, The Herald website reported on Wednesday. The project still needed the approval of its 26% partner, the Industrial Development Corporation, ”but no obstacles are expected”.

It is early in the morning outside house No 3426, in Chiawelo Extension Two, Soweto, and Lawrence Ramadisa is putting out his wares. He arranges boxes of shiny green apples, cabbages, beetroot and spinach. Radamisa is one of the growing number of entrepreneurs in Chiawelo and the fruit and vegetable stall is just one of his ventures.

Ocean warming threatens Antarctic wildlife

Scientists working in Antarctica have discovered an alarming rise in sea temperature that threatens to disrupt populations of penguins, whales, seals and a host of smaller creatures within a few decades. This is the first evidence that the key Southern Ocean is getting warmer: a finding with potentially severe implications for wildlife.
