Pumas fullback Casper Steyn completed a perfect kicking display to spur his team to a 25-16 victory over the Falcons in the final of the Currie Cup first division at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Friday night. The Falcons led 13-9 at the interval. Steyn contributed 20 points via five penalties, a conversion and a drop-goal.

New Zealand won the first Standard Bank one-day international against South Africa A at Willowmoore Park on Friday, after rain and lightning stopped play after 43 overs. When the match was called off, South Africa A, chasing 273 for victory, had 199 for four. New Zealand won the match by 19 runs according to the Duckworth-Lewis formula.

Ten historic buildings in central Johannesburg, some of which were built in the art deco style of the 1930s and 1940s, are to be demolished. The South African Heritage Resource Agency said the advantage of a development to house provincial government offices in one area weighed more than keeping the buildings.

Four new marine protected areas (MPAs) are to be proclaimed along the Cape coastline, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced on Friday. The new areas will bring South Africa’s total number of MPAs to 27, covering almost one-fifth of its coastal waters up to one nautical mile off-shore.

The Zululand Rhino Reserve could develop into the KwaZulu-Natal equivalent of Mala-Mala and Timbavati, provincial arts, culture and tourism minister Narend Singh said on Friday. He was speaking at the official launch of the 24 000ha privately owned reserve in the Msunduzi River valley, near Mkuze.
