Oil prices ease amid slow storm recovery

Oil prices eased on Friday as traders monitored the slow pace of recovery on the United States Gulf Coast after Hurricane Rita and its possible long-term impact on northern-hemisphere winter fuel supplies. Prices rose overnight on news that Gulf of Mexico oil production had started — but only slightly.

Soon the gladiator — and the lion, if it is reasonable — may come to the opinion that attempting to kill each other is a futile, even callous, exercise. Wounded Bayern ready to bite back against Wolves

Bayern Munich have been hailed ”invincible” after churning out a record 15 consecutive league wins but SV Hamburg’s 2-0 win last Saturday has disproved that theory and injected some much-needed excitement into the Bundesliga. Hamburg now find themselves a point behind Bayern after seven matches and travel to Kaiserslautern on Saturday hoping to live up their new status of title contenders.

Central Gauteng on Thursday were all but celebrating the South African Interprovincial men’s golf tournament title after their fourth straight win with one match to play at the Benoni Country Club. After comfortably defeating current champions Western Province 7-5, the team from Johannesburg now face a showdown with Kwazulu-Natal on Friday.

Boyhood rivals clash for the third time

Roy Jones will battle fellow American Antonio Tarver for the third time on Saturday as the two boyhood rivals square off for supremacy in boxing’s light heavyweight division. Jones (49-3, 38 KOs) and Tarver (23-3, 19 KOs) meet in a 12-round main event which Jones hopes will restore his legacy as a boxing champion.

Turkey furious as EU talks stall

Turkey signalled its growing impatience with the European Union on Thursday night by warning that its ministers would not turn up in Luxembourg for membership talks until they are sent a copy of the ground rules. Irritated by the EU’s failure to reach agreement on a framework for the talks, Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul, declared he would remain in Turkey until he is sent a copy.

Hundreds of people laden with bags, bedding and bicycles wait disconsolately on wharves. Under the unremitting sun, anxious passengers crowd the flat decks of rickety barges meant only for cargo.
