Iraqi gunmen on Monday murdered five teachers and a driver at a primary school as United States forces released more than 500 prisoners from the notorious Abu Ghraib jail. In the school attack, 10 gunmen dressed as police officers dragged the teachers from their classrooms, took them to an empty classroom and shot them, police said.

Wildfires began claiming lives — both human and animal — on Monday as they ran unabated across the hot, dry countryside, fanned by heavy winds. A six-year-old girl, Bonakele Ngema, burnt to death in a house where she was trapped while seeking refuge from a roaring blaze that bore down on her in Mntanenkosi reserve, KwaZulu-Natal.

Albert ”Caesar” Tocco, a reputed Mob boss who was sentenced to 200 years after his wife took the unusual step of testifying against him, has died in an Indiana prison. He was 77. Tocco allegedly oversaw organised-crime operations in many of Chicago’s southern suburbs.

Ethiopian police have arrested 43 opposition supporters for allegedly plotting violent subversion ahead of a weekend demonstration called to protest disputed May elections, the official Ethiopian News Agency reported on Monday. An opposition spokesperson, however, rejected the accusations as false.

The government of Tanzania plans to have at least 44 000 people infected with HIV/Aids on anti-retroviral treatment (ARVs) by the end of 2005, President Benjamin Mkapa said on Sunday. This figure, he said, represents about 10% of the actual number of those in need of ARVs.

Goran Ivanisevic, step aside. Ivan Ljubicic is Croatia’s new tennis celebrity. Ljubicic was hailed as a national icon after leading Croatia to their first Davis Cup final, accounting for all three points in the 3-2 win over Russia in the world-group semifinals. Gauteng’s lesbian and gay community took to the streets of Johannesburg on Saturday to celebrate the 16th Annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade. South African gay website <i>Mambaonline</i> said the event was "described by many as one of the most successful to date", though the parade was marred by a bottle-throwing incident.
