Wilkinson out for six weeks after surgery

Jonny Wilkinson will likely miss England’s autumn Tests against Australia, New Zealand and Samoa after having his appendix removed. The Newcastle flyhalf had the operation on Friday and will be sidelined for up to six weeks. ”I think it pretty much puts paid to the autumn internationals,” Newcastle’s director of rugby said.

Hong Kong Disneyland sued over long queues

A day after opening its ,5-billion Hong Kong theme park, Disney was on Tuesday already facing a lawsuit from a disgruntled visitor. Hung Wah-fung (45) says the queues were so long when he visited with his wife and two sons on a rehearsal day for the park on September 4 that he was unable to get on some of the rides.

Diplomat key in forging US-China ties

Xiong Xianghui, a former assistant to Chinese premier Zhou Enlai who was involved in the rapprochement between Beijing and Washington in the early 1970s, has died of lung cancer, state media reported on Tuesday. He was 86. An official funeral was to be held at Babaoshan Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery in Beijing.

Eleven children locked in cages in Ohio home

Sheriff’s deputies have found 11 children locked in cages less than 1m high inside a home in Ohio, United States, but a couple deny they abused or neglected the children. A judge on Monday put the children — who range in age from one to 14 and who have various disabilities, including autism — in foster homes.

Aussie player to give finger to footy

An Australian professional football player said on Tuesday he plans to have one of his fingers amputated in an attempt to improve his game. Brett Backwell told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation he has suffered from pain and restricted movement since he broke his left ring finger three years ago.

DA urges ID to sack rapist MPL

The Democratic Alliance has urged the Independent Democrats to sack ID Northern Cape MPL John Gunda, who was sentenced in the Upington Regional Court on Monday to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape. ”The ID must do the honourable thing and dismiss … Gunda,” the DA said.
