Volkswagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, could axe up to 30 000 jobs, or almost a third of its German workforce, in a drive to cut costs and boost profits launched on Monday by the new head of its loss-making VW brand. The news came as rival carmaker Ford received a boost with the -billion sale of its Hertz car-rental business.

The armed Basque separatist group Eta is expected to call a ceasefire within three months after secret, indirect negotiations with the Spanish government, according to press reports on Monday. The newspaper El Mundo quoted unnamed sources as saying that a date for a ceasefire is ”practically fixed”.

Standard Bank has raised R3-billion through a debut securitisation transaction aimed at reducing the bank’s funding requirements and enhancing capital management. A special-purpose company Accelerator Fund 1 has issued asset-backed notes to fund an acquisition of motor-vehicle loans from Standard Bank.

One person has died following a typhoid outbreak in the Delmas area in Mpumalanga, a report said on Monday. The latest figures say that 287 cases of typhoid have been reported since the outbreak on August 22. Eighty-nine of the cases have been hospitalised. There are 1 406 people suffering from diarrhoea.

"Great Train Robber" Ronnie Biggs would have had little interest in a heist on the train that runs the 40km from the centre of Cape Town to the naval port of Simon’s Town to the south. The restaurant car has been named Biggsy’s Restaurant in honour of the legendary robber and long-time fugitive from English justice.

South Africa is well on its way to meeting its Millennium Development Goals, according to the government’s report card released recently. The report will be presented to the United Nations world summit in New York. The country has been doing well in, among other things, decreasing the proportion of poor people higher rates of enrolment in primary schools and eradicating malaria.
