NPA refuses to return Zuma documents

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will not hand over documents seized during raids on Jacob Zuma’s residences, his lawyer said on Monday. Michael Hulley said the NPA told him that it wants to wait for the outcome of an appeal on a case regarding Zuma’s former attorney, Julekha Mahomed.

Kagiso Media increases earnings by 13%

Kagiso Media said on Monday that it has recorded headline earnings per share of 78,7 cents for the 12-month period ended June this year. This represented a 13,3% increase in headline earnings per share from 69,5 cents reported last year. The group declared a final dividend of 44 cents per share.

Govt to review BEE in 2013

South Africa’s broad-based black economic empowerment (BEE) strategy will be reviewed in 2013, says Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mpahlwa. The minister said the black economic advisory council established by the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003 will conduct the review.

Triumphant Koizumi plans to attend UN summit

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, fresh from a historic election victory, plans to go to New York this week for a United Nations summit due to take up Tokyo’s cherished UN reform bid, the government said on Monday. It has been a long-time diplomatic goal of Tokyo to get a permanent seat on the Security Council.

No rush to reform top UN body, Russia says

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov warned on Monday that attempts to rush reform of the United Nations Security Council would risk splitting the world body. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has said he hopes for an agreement on the sensitive issue of reforming the Security Council by year’s end.

Jubilant Palestinians enter Gaza settlements

Ecstatic crowds of Palestinians flooded into empty Jewish settlements on Monday, setting abandoned synagogues on fire and looting ruined buildings in a celebration of the end of 38 years of Israeli military rule over the Gaza Strip. Plans by Palestinian police to bar crowds from the settlements quickly disintegrated, and militant groups hoisted flags and fired wildly into the air.

Ahmed Kathrada publishes Robben Island writings

Liberation stuggle veteran Ahmed ”Kathy” Kathrada on Sunday launched a book of poetry, songs and quotations he transcribed while locked away for 26 years in apartheid prisons. The book — A Free Mind: Ahmed Kathrada’s Notebook from Robben Island — was launched at a function in Mayfair, Johannesburg.

North Carolina watches Ophelia, mindful of Katrina

As Hurricane Ophelia churned off the North Carolina coast, Steve King grudgingly agreed to miss watching football on television to go down to the marina and move his sea kayak out of harm’s way. As he and his brother-in-law hoisted the kayak on to his Jeep, King said the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina was on his mind.
