Hurricane Katrina’s damage will likely lead to a ”largely temporary” slowdown in national economic growth, though the impact on the Gulf Coast economy will be more profound, United States Treasury Secretary John Snow said on Friday. Spending on storm recovery and rebuilding will likely spur growth in 2006, Snow said.

Australia took what appeared to be a calculated risk after accepting an offer of bad light when well set on the second day of the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval in London on Friday. At stumps, Australia were on their tea score of 112 without loss, 261 behind England’s below-par first-innings 373 after no play took place in the final session with 37 overs lost.

The Leopards scored their first win in the premier league of the Currie Cup when they managed a last-minute try to beat the Cavaliers narrowly 50-47 in an exciting match at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Friday. In other matches, the Falcons beat the Bulldogs 37-36 and the Griffons beat the Mighty Elephants 63-33.

Frantz Kruger, the South African discus record holder, recorded his best performance in three appearances at the IAAF World Athletics final in Monaco on Friday night when he finished in fifth spot with a throw of 63,19m. Iraq President Jalal Talabani on Friday warned that an abrupt withdrawal of United States forces from his country ”could lead to the victory of the terrorists in Iraq” and make Iraq more vulnerable to interference from neighbouring countries. But Talabani hinted that if all goes well, the US-led coalition could leave within two years.
