Donald Horne, a historian and author who first labelled Australia ”The Lucky Country” and was credited with helping launch its republican movement, has died at age 83, his agent said. Horne, who also was a respected journalist, died early on Thursday at his Sydney home, said his literary agent, Jane Cameron.

Internet giant Yahoo! on Thursday sidestepped claims that it aided China in the jailing of a journalist after he sent an email from a Yahoo account, saying it has to abide by rules laid down in the countries it operates. The company refused to comment further on a claim that it gave information to the Chinese government leading to Shi Tao being jailed for 10 years.

As water officials dispatch clean water to typhoid-affected Delmas in Mpumalanga, one confirmed sufferer is being discharged from hospital, officials said on Thursday. Provincial health spokesperson John Mlangeni said there were still 380 cases of diarrhoea, 30 suspected cases of typhoid and nine confirmed cases.

Powerful Typhoon Nabi left Japan on Thursday after criss-crossing north to south in a path of destruction that left 32 dead or missing in Japan and South Korea and flooded thousands of homes.
