Referee jailed for killing soccer coach

A soccer referee who shot and killed a coach last year will effectively spend four years in prison, media reports said on Friday. The Grahamstown High Court sentenced Ncedisile Zakhe (26) on Thursday to six years in prison for culpable homicide. Zakhe shot dead Kenton-on-Sea coach Michael Sizani on July 24 last year.

Donald, Garcia one off lead in European Masters

Defending champion Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia opened with five-under 66s, putting them one stroke off the lead on Thursday in the first round of the European Masters. Peter Hedblom of Sweden also had a 66. Garry Houston of Wales and Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden and David Carter of England opened with 65s to lead the tournament.

Agassi cuts Karlovic down to size

Eight-time grand-slam champion Andre Agassi delivered on a tall order on Thursday, downing rangy Croatian Ivo Karlovic in straight sets to reach the third round of the United States Open tennis championships. Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne raced into the third round.

Owen’s Newcastle move is good for England

Like an old joke, Michael Owen is now officially black-and-white and red all over. He wanted to go to Liverpool, he ended up at Newcastle. He wanted to be reunited with his old mates, fresh from their European Cup triumph. On Wednesday, he arrived in the land of the Geordies, to a club currently goalless and propping up the Premiership.

Jenas escapes goldfish bowl

Newcastle, having paid a club record fee for Michael Owen, were also involved in the second biggest deal of the final day of the transfer window when Jermaine Jenas joined Tottenham Hotspur for £7-million. In addition, the Tyneside club re-signed the 30-year-old Nolberto Solano from Aston Villa.
