New tourism BEE charter welcomed

A black economic empowerment (BEE) charter for tourism will benefit the industry, the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry said on Monday. Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced the South African tourism BEE charter in Durban on Sunday.

Observers praise peaceful Ethiopian vote run-up

European Union observers on Monday lauded the openness of the run-up to Ethiopia’s upcoming general elections, following peaceful mass rallies at the weekend by government and opposition supporters. ”Never before in Ethiopian history has there been such an open debate in the country,” said the EU delegation chief in Addis Ababa.

Anglo American predicts tiny fall in earnings

Global mining giant Anglo American will show a very small decline of nine United States cents in its basic headline earnings per share for the year to the end of December 2004, to $1,79 from $1,88, as it converts to the use of the new European Union standard International Financial Reporting Standards, the company said on Monday.

Absa deal, weak rand boost JSE

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was stronger across the board at midday on Monday, with Barclays’ confirmed bid for Absa boosting banking shares. A weaker rand gave the broader market a lift. The rand was quoted at R6,10 per dollar from R6,04 when the bourse closed on Friday.
