Pirates comfortably on top

Premier Soccer League log leaders Orlando Pirates extended their lead to six points over rivals Kaizer Chiefs when the Buccaneers beat Wits University 1-0 at Oppenheimer Stadium in Orkney on Sunday. Pirates registered their 17th win. They now have amassed 59 points from 29 matches.

Santos ensure survival

Santos made certain of remaining in the Premier Soccer League when they drew their match with Silver Stars 1-1 in a game played at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday night. Santos took the lead in the 39th minute when a Marawaan Bantam free kick from 30m out hit the underside of the crossbar and went in.

Nigeria’s Dolphin sink Supersport

Dolphin of Nigeria took a giant step toward qualifying for the pool phase of the African Confederation Cup with a 4-1 home victory over Supersport United of South Africa on Sunday. USMA of Algeria snatched a last-minute draw against Al-Marsa of Tunisia in Algiers thanks to a goal from international midfielder Hocine Achiou.

Singh wins in play-off

Fiji’s Vijay Singh ran down Sergio Garcia and then outlasted Garcia and Jim Furyk in a three-way play-off, winning the ,6-million Wachovia Championship on the fourth hole of sudden death in North Carolina on Sunday. Singh and Furyk had both erased a six-shot deficit in regulation, posting final-round 66s.

Sanlam, Remgro to sell stakes in Absa

Financial services group Sanlam has agreed to sell its stake in Absa to British banker Barclays. It has entered into a conditional irrevocable undertaking that it will dispose of at least 60% of its Absa shareholding to Barclays for R82,50 per share. Industrial holding giant Remgro has also committed to sell all or part of its 9,3% stake in Absa.

Windies admit to batting ‘very poorly’

South Africa defied a 75-minute stoppage for rain to complete an eight-wicket win in the second one-day international against the West Indies on Sunday. Opening batsman Boeta Dippenaar top-scored for the South Africans with an undefeated 60 from 78 balls that contained four boundaries and earned the man-of-the-match award.
