Change of Fortune

The Quinton Fortune saga is about to take another fascinating turn: Newcastle’s grumpy Graeme Souness is reported to be after the 27-year-old and is prepared to pay £2-million for Manchester United’s South African midfielder. There’s also talk of a swap deal involving Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given.

DRDGold confirms it’s being sued in US

South African gold mining group DRDGold confirmed on Friday that a class action lawsuit had been filed in the United States against the company, its chief executive and chief financial officer. The lawsuit alleges that the company made certain false and misleading statements between October 23 2003 and February 24 2005.

Wigan in wonderland

Wigan Athletic will begin their first ever season in the top flight in the most glamorous possible fashion: by hosting Premiership champions Chelsea. Chelsea will visit the JJB Stadium on August 13 amid what promises to be a carnival atmosphere and one which manager Paul Jewell and owner Dave Whelan will no doubt savour.

‘Sugar’ not the only one sweet on Alam

Faria Alam, the secretary propelled into tabloid infamy through her affair with the England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Football Association’s chief executive Mark Palios, this week claimed she had been sexually harassed by a third official. Alam also told the tribunal that the England manager urged her to deny they had had an affair when rumours first emerged.

Another ‘trophy’ for the toon

Earlier this month England’s 2004 young footballer of the year changed hands between the country’s clubs for £6,5-million, bringing the total spent on one of the brightest prospects Charlton have ever produced to £16,5-million in 17 months. In that time Scott Parker has played in two England friendlies, one Champions League semi-final, and made eight Premiership starts.
