The forgotten child soldiers

There is about 30 000 child soldiers in the DRC, 12 500 of them girls. The Commission of Africa’s report warns that without decade-long aid for countries that have suffered conflict, the former child soldiers — now young adults — may return to conflict and in turn recruit a new generation of child warriors

How Japan grew bored with love

It hardly seems fair to describe Makoto Nishio and Mayuko Suzuki as social miscreants. They are well-educated and ambitious, work hard and spare as much time as they can for family and friends. But they have helped set in motion a demographic time-bomb because, in their thirties, they choose to remain single and childless.

Jerusalem orders Palestinian homes to be razed

Jerusalem’s city council has ordered one of the largest mass demolitions in the city’s recent history, with plans to raze the homes of about 1 000 Palestinians in a neighbourhood claimed by Jewish settlers. The council says about 90 buildings served with demolition orders were built illegally over the last three decades on a site of religious and archaeological value.

Super 14 franchise ‘non-negotiable’

The awarding of a Rugby Super 14 franchise to the Southern and Eastern Cape must be ”non negotiable” when the SA Rugby Union’s President’s Council meets to discuss the matter on Wednesday. This is the view of the SEC bidding franchise, comprising the Border, Eastern Province and South Western Districts Rugby Unions.
