A broad base leaves a small slice

Helping organisations with a broad base of shareholders or beneficiaries buy into a company, with a dollop of employee-share ownership has been very much in favour. It has seemed to be the best riposte to the idea that black economic empowerment is a plot to create a buffer class of rich, black capitalists between white capital and the poor.

A flesh-and-blood test of faith

Transubstantiation has always been a difficult concept to come to grips with. Even many of Jesus’s first listeners left in disbelief upon hearing the words: ”He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.”

Stop the violence, says Allan Heyl

Former Stander gang member Allan Heyl said on Monday that he symbolises the worst of what is happening in South Africa, and pleaded with the country to ”stop the violence”. Heyl, who was released from Krugersdorp prison last week, told a press conference in Johannesburg that he was a misfit in the past.

Rugby boss marshals his troops

South African Rugby Union president Brian van Rooyen on Monday made overwhelming strides over his deputy, Andre Markgraaff, in the spiteful race for control of the sport in this country. Eleven of the 14 provincial union presidents — all those present at a hastily convened meeting — declared their support of the embattled rugby boss.

World number one Roger Federer of Switzerland cruised into the second round of the French Open on Monday with a straight-sets win over Israeli qualifier Dudi Sela. Rafael Nadal’s dream of becoming the first man in 23 years to win the French Open on his debut got off to a flying start on Monday with an impressive first-round win.

Parliament announces its moral aspirations

South Africa’s Parliament has a strategic plan that includes the intention of turning the institution into "a beacon of good moral behaviour", according to its secretary, Zingile Dingani. On Monday, journalists asked why it is that parliamentarians are able to remain on as members after being convicted of Travelgate fraud charges.
