Ntini named cricketer of the year

Makhaya Ntini was named South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year at the Annual Mutual and Federal Awards dinner on Wednesday. The Protea paceman’s persistence, stamina and success made him a strong candidate. Ntini took 58 wickets in 14 Tests, in the process becoming the third South African to reach 200 Test wickets.

DA wants inquiry into Presidency official

The Democratic Alliance has called for an inquiry into how an official working in the Office of the Presidency was suspended, dismissed, re-appointed, and once again suspended. DA MP and social development spokesperson Mike Waters said on Wednesday this was revealed in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

An 89th-minute goal by Scara Ngobese earned the Premier Soccer League defending champions, Kaizer Chiefs, a hard-fought 1-0 win over 10-man Supersport United at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night. AmaKhosi must beat Bloemfontein Celtic in their final league match on Sunday to pip Orlando Pirates for the title.

Super 12 crunch time for the Bulls

Wallaby hooker Brendan Cannon returned to the Waratahs lineup for Saturday’s Super 12 semifinal in an indication the Waratahs’ pack aims to muscle up against the Bulls. Springbok locks Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield lead a large pack looking to bounce back from their last match against the Waratahs — a 42-12 loss in Sydney in round five.

The massive South African Airways (SAA) advertising account is likely to come up for tender some time this year and – if rumours hold true – incumbent HerdBuoys McCann-Erickson may find the going tough. Growing pressure on prisons under strain

Nearly a decade ago, the Kampala Declaration on Prison Conditions in Africa was drawn up to improve the situation of inmates across the continent. In an ironic twist, however, the capital that gave its name to the initiative has yet to meet the goals of the declaration. The same goes for the rest of Uganda. Prisons in the country are overcrowded and vermin-infested.

The problem of Pomfret

People in Pomfret are tired of talking about the mercenaries. ”We only know they went to get bread, that’s all we know,” says Maria Dala. The men who ”went to get bread” had not just gone round to the corner café. Hidden among thorn trees in the remoter reaches of North West province, Pomfret doesn’t have a café; the fruit and veg stall where Dala stands is the only retail business to be seen.
