SA fight back against Windies

South Africa were 182-3 at stumps on the second day of the second Test against the West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval on Saturday, in reply to the home side’s first-innings total of 347 all out. Skipper Graeme Smith was 90 not out and night watchman Monde Zondeki unbeaten on one.

Exciting victory for Bush Bucks

In the most exciting Castle Premiership encounter on Saturday, Bush Bucks beat Moroka Swallows 3-2 at the Rand Stadium. Bucks’ Bulelani Matroos opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with a well-taken header. Swallows equalised in the 55th minute after Alois Ngwerume stabbed the ball home from close range.

Bulldogs surprise the Bulls

In a Vodacom Cup weekend dominated by upsets, the biggest came at Securicor Loftus on Saturday afternoon. With almost no one giving them a chance of winning, the bottom-of-the-log Border Bulldogs surprised the Vodacom Blue Bulls to run out 33-26 winners. Starring for the Bulldogs was flyhalf Reinhard Gerber.

DiMarco holds off charging Tiger

Runaway Masters leader Chris DiMarco kept his cool in Augusta in the third round on Saturday when he held off a charging Tiger Woods and Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn. All three, along with 41 other players, will have to return early on Sunday morning to finish their rounds after darkness halted play.

Hurricanes hang on to win

Wallabies fullback Mat Rogers missed the conversion of Phil Waugh’s last-minute try to allow the Wellington Hurricanes to hang on to a 26-24 win over the New South Wales Waratahs on Sunday. The Waratahs remained without a win in Wellington in the 10 years of the Super 12 but left the match with two bonus points.

MG Rover South Africa has reassured its clients that they will not be affected by the international group’s financial problems, South African Broadcasting Corporation radio news reported on Saturday. This follows the announcement that the car manufacturer is going into financial administration.

‘Cape Doctor’ of jazz in a coma

Saxophonist Robbie Jansen is in a stable but critical condition in the Tygerberg hospital after collapsing into a coma on Monday. Jansen, considered by many to be a guru of Cape jazz, is affectionately known as the Cape Doctor — after the south-easter — for his blowing skills.
