Darwin joins the Perth evolution

Perth capped an impressive week of recruiting on Friday with the appointment of former Wallaby prop Ben Darwin assistant forwards coach of the new Super 14 franchise. Darwin is currently head coach of Sydney club Northern Districts and will remain as such until the end of the Tooheys New Cup before relocating to Perth in October.

Wife nearly divorced over food-dye name

A man in eastern China tried to divorce his wife who has the same Chinese name as the cancer-causing dye Sudan I, which has made headlines across China in a recent food scare, state media reported on Friday. The husband of Su Danhong, the same Chinese name for the harmful Sudan Red dye, came home one day and told her he wanted a divorce.

Pilgrims descend on St Peter’s Square

A seething mass of pilgrims pushed their way into St Peter’s Square on Friday, desperate to secure a front-seat position for the funeral on Friday of Pope John Paul II. Police opened the square to the crowds at 7am, leading to a dangerous crush at the entrance before the crowd was shepherded toward metal detectors.

Kuerten crumbles as Nadal scores

Former triple French Open winner Gustavo Kuerten’s comeback from injury ended at the second round stage of the Valencia ATP tournament in Spain on Thursday when he was beaten by Spain’s Albert Martin 6-2, 6-0. But Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal, widely tipped as a possible champion at Roland Garros this year, was in awesome form.

Windies lead women’s series against SA

The West Indies took an unbeatable lead in their three-match one-day international series against the South African women’s cricket team at the Tshwane University of Technology Oval on Thursday, with a seven-wicket victory over the home side.
The West Indies won the toss and sent South Africa in to bat.

Rain follows golfers to Masters

On a rain-soaked opening to the Masters, Casey Wittenberg made the turn with a two-under 34 and a share of the early lead on Thursday, while David Duval showed signs of snapping out of a mystifying slump. Much of the attention was on Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and defending champion Phil Mickelson.
