Cosatu has accused ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe of attacking the movement’s integrity by suggesting that its plans to revisit Zimbabwe was motivated by a desire to attract media attention. During their last visit, Cosatu delegates were deported back to South Africa for involving themselves in Zimbabwean activities.

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was in the red at midday on Tuesday on the back of weaker world markets and a rotation out of banking and cyclical industrial stocks. Resources posted gains, however, helped by a weaker rand. At 12.05pm, the all-share and all-share industrial indices were 0,39% and 0,85% weaker respectively.

SA Rugby on Monday confirmed the preliminary South African squads to participate in the 2005 Vodacom Rugby Super 12 competition. Three of the four South African squads — the Cats, Sharks and Stormers — must still add players, while the Bulls have confirmed a full squad of 30 players.

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has conceded that only a Chelsea collapse can prevent the London club collecting a first top-flight title in 50 years. The midfielder turned in a vintage display during United’s 1-0 win away to Liverpool on Saturday, a result that kept the Red Devils third and just a point behind second-placed champions Arsenal.

The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, on Monday ordered his security forces to prevent attacks against Israeli targets after the bombing of a Gaza border crossing prompted Ariel Sharon to break off contact with the new Palestinian leadership. Abbas has repeatedly called for an end to the attacks on Israeli targets, saying that they damage the Palestinian cause.

West Indian cricketing superstar Brian Lara offered Australia’s premier pace-bowler, Glenn McGrath, some friendly advice in Brisbane on Tuesday — think twice about playing in the 2007 World Cup. Lara said McGrath is a champion bowler but his age — he will be 35 next month — could count against him.
