Iraq’s library struggles to rise from the ashes

From the outside it is an unpromising sight. The brickwork of the three-storey building is scarred with black scorch marks from last year’s looting, and the cold concrete wall and floors are still bare where the furniture and fittings were stripped away. Only the sign above the entrance was spared, a blue-tiled mosaic announcing to the few who still visit: The House of Books and Documents.

Thousands flee fighting in the DRC

More than 100 000 Congolese have fled renewed fighting between the Democratic Republic of Congo army and rebels in the battle-torn east of the country, United Nations officials said on Monday. The civilians trekked deep into the mountainous jungle to escape weekend fighting around the deserted farming town of Kanyabayonga.

Ispat Iscor to change name

Following the merger of LNM Holdings, which has a 50% stake in steel group Ispat Iscor, with Ispat International to form Mittal Steel Company, Ispat Iscor will be renamed and rebranded Mittal Steel South Africa. The name change is, however, subject to Ispat Iscor shareholder approval.

Swazi king buys into MTN

South African-based mobile telecommunications group MTN announced on Tuesday that the Swazi monarch, King Mswati III, has gained a 6% interest in MTN Swaziland through Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation’s (SPTC) sale of some of its shares. SPTC is the kingdom’s fixed-line operator.

England were on the verge of victory when bad light stopped play 13 minutes early on the fourth day of the first Castle Lager/MTN Test against South Africa at St George’s Park on Monday. England, chasing the modest target of 142 for victory, were 93 for three at stumps.

England took just more than half an hour to wrap up the first Castle Lager/MTN Test against South Africa at St George’s Park on Tuesday, to take a one-nil lead in the five-Test series. England started the final morning needing just 49 runs to reach their target of 142, with seven wickets in hand.

Fifa’s top footballer speaks out on racism

Brazil’s newly crowned Fifa World Footballer of the Year Ronaldinho says he is committed in the fight against racism in the sport. Ronaldinho, who beat out Thierry Henry of France and Ukrainian 2004 European Footballer of the Year Andriy Shevchenko for the prize, said the scourge of racism has to be stamped out.

Bush backs embattled Rumsfeld

United States President George Bush defended his embattled Pentagon chief, Donald Rumsfeld, on Monday by praising his conduct during the war in Iraq and his compassion for US troops. The display of support comes at a time when Rumsfeld is fending off calls for his resignation from Republicans as well as Democrats, after being accused of poor military planning and for a callous approach towards US forces.
