Hefty increase in petrol price announced

South Africa’s petrol price for all grades will rise by 42 cents a litre (c/l) from March 2, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Monday.

The wholesale price of diesel 0,3% sulphur will rise by 33c/l and that of diesel 0,05% sulphur by 36c/l.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will increase by 35c/l, while the single maximum national retail price of illuminating paraffin will rise by 46c/l on the same date.

During the review period, the average international product prices of petroleum products increased.

The average rand/dollar exchange rate weakened when compared with the previous period. The average rand/dollar exchange rate for the period was R6,0359 compared with R5,9206 and only R5,7867 during the December averaging period.

The minister of minerals and energy also approved an interim retail margin increase of 0,8c/l on all grades of petrol. Last week, Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel announced a 5c/l rise in the fuel levy from April, and a further 5c/l increase in the Road Accident Fund from the same date. — I-Net Bridge
