We are now informed that there are four types of women who seek to get to the top in a working world that is still, overall, dominated by men. These are, according to a new book written by a former BBC executive: the bitch; the geisha; the guy; and the invisible woman. However much working women are categorised as ”bitches”, the truth is we are all these and more.

‘The journey of the nation has begun’

Ten years ago, Aboriginal Australian Michael Long was a champion in Australia’s most popular winter sport — Australian Rules football. In his country, Long was a universally popular hero because of his exploits on the football field. Last week, Long was back in the limelight, trekking 400km to meet with newly re-elected Australian Prime Minister John Howard about the deplorable state of Aboriginal affairs in his country.

Graeme Smith ‘can’t wait’ for England Test

The South African cricket team were buoyant on Tuesday after their three-day training camp at the High Performance Centre at the Tuks sports ground, and ahead of the first Castle Lager/MTN Test against England in Port Elizabeth on Friday. Team captain Graeme Smith said the team were really focused ahead of the Test, and he expected a hard battle against England.

Struggling Manning Rangers have roped former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker into their technical staff department. The Mighty Maulers are lying at the bottom of the Castle Premiership log and play against Wits University during their Castle Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.

SA make it to water-polo final

South Africa have secured a place in Wednesday night’s final of the women’s international water-polo tournament taking place at the Joan Harrison complex in East London. Pipping Australia by five goals to four in the tense semifinal, after at one stage being 0-3 down, the South Africans now come up against favourites Russia.

Russia on water-polo winning streak

Russia continued their winning streak on Tuesday night at the women’s international water-polo tournament in East London when they trounced South Africa A 22-4 in the last of the first-round matches. The well-drilled and super-fit Russian team have dominated the tournament so far, convincingly winning all their matches.

Less Christmas cheer at Liverpool

Portsmouth’s Lomana LuaLua scored an injury-time equaliser to earn a point against Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Tuesday, which will hamper the home side’s attempts to get in touch with the leading clubs during the Christmas programme. LuaLua headed home from a cross by substitute Matthew Taylor.

Cycling champion in legal battle

Lance Armstrong is suing a former personal assistant who claims the six-time defending Tour de France champion owes him  000. In a lawsuit filed on Monday, Armstrong and his personal service company, Luke David LLC, are seeking to declare an alleged employment contract with Mike Anderson invalid.

US trade deficit swells to all-time high

The United States’s trade deficit swelled to an all-time high of ,5-billion in October as imports — including those from China — surged to the loftiest levels on record. Skyrocketing crude-oil prices also contributed to the yawning trade gap. The trade imbalance widened by a sizable 8,9% in October from the previous month.
