Naspers’ MIH to acquire 9,9% in Beijing Media

Dual-listed media and entertainment group Naspers announced on Monday that its subsidiary MIH will invest in the soon-to-be listed Beijing Media Corporation, a marketing and advertising sales vehicle for print media in China. MIH will buy 9,9% in the initial public offering of BMC, which will be floated on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on December 22.

Swallows fly high

Cecil Orsen was a welcome newcomer when he helped Moroka Swallows to beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1 in their Premier Soccer League match at the Herman Immelman Stadium in Germiston on Sunday. Orsen scored a brace to give Swallows a much-needed win after suffering consecutive defeats from Bush Bucks and Kaizer Chiefs recently.

India defeat Bangladesh in first Test

Pacers Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan claimed the last two wickets on Monday as India triumphed over Bangladesh in the first Test by an innings and 140 runs. Bangladesh were bundled out on 202 after a dismal 184 all out in the first innings. India amassed 526 thanks to 248 scored by star batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

SA bowlers have the upper hand

For the second day, South Africa A had the better of things in their three-day match against England at Sedgars Park on Sunday. At close of play, England, on 154 for seven and with a lead of 98, were facing the possibility of a hefty defeat in their warm-up match before the first Test in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Peace Prize brings its own challenges

Wangari Maathai, civil activist recently turned politician, now has another role to fill: Nobel Peace Prize-winner. The Kenyan was officially awarded the prize on Friday at a ceremony in Oslo. Thrust suddenly into the limelight like never before, the 64-year-old Kikuyu woman has taken it all on with grace and good humour.

Wenger defends clever Henry

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised Thierry Henry’s speed of thought after the striker stroked home a quick free-kick that helped champions Arsenal to a 2-2 draw against Premiership leaders Chelsea at Highbury on Sunday. Chelsea’s Portuguese boss, Jose Mourinho, claimed the goal should have been disallowed.
