Porto beat Caldas in penalty shoot-out

FC Porto of Portugal defeated Once Caldas of Colombia 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw to win the last edition of the Intercontinental Cup in Japan on Sunday. In an amazing penalty shoot-out each side scored seven and missed one before Colombian defender John Edwin Garcia blasted over the bar, allowing Pedro Emanuel to slot home the winner for the European champions.

‘Kick up the backside’ for England

Neither lightning nor rain was able to save England from defeat on the third day of their warm-up match against South Africa A at Sedgars Park on Monday. South Africa A needed just 30 overs to win the match by seven wickets and give South Africa a psychological edge ahead of the first Castle Lager/MTN Test in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Bomb-threat match to resume in January

Real Madrid and Real Sociedad will complete their suspended game on January 5, Spain’s football federation said on Monday. The match was stopped on Sunday when a bomb threat emptied Santiago Bernabeu stadium with three minutes to play and the scored tied 1-1. About 70 000 fans and players cleared the stadium.

Water-polo action kicks off in Eastern Cape

The women’s international water-polo tournament at the Joan Harrison complex in East London got off to a cracking start on Saturday, followed by more top-class action on Sunday. South Africa A netted 13 goals to nil in their game against South Africa B, while the South African Under-20 team fought hard but succumbed to Australia.

Woods vaults past Montgomerie

Tiger Woods shot a bogey-free five-under-par 66 on Sunday to overtake a fading Colin Montgomerie and win the ,25-million World Challenge. ”It was so exciting that the things I was working on started to come together,” he said. ”It’s nice not to have a big laundry list out there [heading into next season].” Woods won in 2001 but had finished second the last two years.
