Zimbabwe’s Petroleum Marketers’ Association (PMA) has opened tenders for the supply of petrol and diesel. The latest move comes as fuel queues snake through Harare’s streets. The PMA said on Tuesday it is tendering for the monthly supply of 24-million litres of petrol and 26-million litres of diesel.

South Africans think President Thabo Mbeki spends too much time out of the country, a survey on foreign affairs has found. Asked if Mbeki devotes too much time to Africa and too little to South Africa, 62% agreed. On the Zimbabwe question, only 11% of those interviewed felt President Robert Mugabe is doing a good job.

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was weaker in noon trade on Tuesday, led lower by resources and telecommunications stocks, which were knocked by analysts’ downgrades. Trade was brisk, with about R1,5-billion-worth of shares changing hands. By 12.03pm, the all-share index slipped 0,65%.

Shareholders of world number four gold-miner Gold Fields on Tuesday voted down the merger of the group’s international assets with those of Canada’s Iamgold. This could pave the way for Harmony’s bid to merge with Gold Fields to form the world’s largest gold-miner to continue.

Even when he’s asleep, Scott Kearnan is hooked into the internet. He just turns down the volume on his computer, so he’s not awakened by the ”brrring” of a late-night instant message. ”It’s become something for me that’s almost like a telephone. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on Tuesday rejected an Ethiopian peace proposal made in late November, in what was his first declaration on the issue, an official statement said. The Ethiopian proposal ”contains no new developments” and it would ”drag the peace process another step backwards,” he insisted in a statement published by the Eritrean information ministry.
