Kaizer Chiefs in upset draw

Silver Stars caused an upset at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane where they held defending champions Kaizer Chiefs to a 0-0 draw in a hard-fought Castle Premiership clash played on Sunday.

There was little excitement in the opening 45 minutes. Chiefs had two opportunities to score and Stars had one during a dull opening period.

Stars captain Dingane Masanabo forced Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez to pull off a good save in the ninth minute. But that was the home side’s only real attempt at Chiefs’ goal in the half.

Chiefs slowly got into the game. Zambian striker Songwe Chalwe missed two chances for Chiefs with both attempts in the 33rd and 39th minutes narrowly wide of the target.

The second half was played at a faster pace with both teams squandering golden chances. Stars midfielder Koketso Mmotong missed a sitter in the 63rd minute when, with only Fernandez to beat, he blasted his shot well over the crossbar.

Chiefs got the upper hand but failed to break down the well-marshalled Stars defence. Chiefs midfielder Gerald Sibeko saw his shot sail over the crossbar on in the 71st minute.

The miss of the day was to Amakhosi substitute striker David Radebe, who forgot to bring along his shooting boots. Radebe missed from close range in the 89th minute when it looked easier to score than miss. — Sapa
