Thirty youths from President Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF were denied bail on Thursday following their weekend arrest in Zimbabwe for beating up opposition supporters and stabbing a police officer. The young Zanu-PF members commandeered cars from local residents and attacked opposition supporters.

Six people, including four children, were killed in three separate avalanches in Indian Kashmir on Thursday as thousands of motorists remained stranded on a highway due to heavy snowfall, police said. The prime interest rate is to remain steady at 11% after the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) opted on Thursday to keep the repo rate, at which it lends money to commercial banks, at 7,5%. Zambia has met most of the requirements to qualify for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) relief programme that could slash its ,8-billion debt by more than half, an IMF official announced on Thursday. A joint IMF and World Bank mission to assess Zambia’s economic performance said Zambia’s economy has greatly improved in recent years.
