Spectators jostle for seats in lion trial

There was a crush at the door of Phalaborwa Circuit Court on Tuesday as spectators jostled for seats in the public gallery for the second day in the trial of three men accused of feeding a former colleague to lions. People queued outside from early on Tuesday morning to be assured of a place inside.

Environment director general quits govt

Director General of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Chippy Olver is to quit at the end of February, the environment ministry announced in a statement on Tuesday. ”I guess his own feeling is he has been in government for the last 10 years and he wants a bit of fresh air,” departmental spokesperson JP Louw said.

Bergkamp hopes for extra Arsenal season

Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp hopes to end his playing career when Arsenal bid farewell to their historic Highbury home in north London next season. Bergkamp, 36 in May, proved he still has what it takes to succeed in the Premiership when he scored Arsenal’s winner in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Newcastle at Highbury with a sublime finish.

Lions won’t need me, says Johnson

England World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson has said the British and Irish Lions won’t need him on their forthcoming tour of New Zealand. The 34-year-old Leicester lock retired from international rugby union early last year just months after leading England to the 2003 World Cup.
