President Domitien Ndayizeye of Burundi has sacked his deputy, Alphonse-Marie Kadege, the president’s spokesperson said on Wednesday, two days after Kadege said he doubted a crucial constitutional referendum could be held as planned later this month. ”The head of state has sacked his vice-president,” said the spokesperson.

A 56-year-old single mother gave birth on Tuesday to fraternal twins just three days before her 57th birthday. New York 1 broadcaster reported that the twins — Francesca, and her brother Gian — were delivered in a Caesarean procedure. With their delivery, the mother, Aleta St James, a therapist, broke a national record as the oldest mother of twins in the United States.

An estimated 15% of babies born in Lesotho become infected with HIV each year, the Lesotho government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) said on Wednesday. Unicef and the government released a mid-term review on Wednesday of their programme of cooperation for 2002 to 2007.
