There were no major surprises when the South African cricket squad to tour India was announced on Wednesday. As had been widely predicted, vice-captain and wicketkeeper, Mark Boucher, was not in the squad. Thami Tsolekile of Western Province/Boland will take up the wicketkeeping duties, while Eagles captain Nicky Boje was named vice-captain of the team.

Arsene Wenger has extended his contract at English champions Arsenal for another three years to the end of the 2007/08 season. That includes the first two years at the £350-million, 60 000-seat Emirates Stadium, which is due to open in August 2006.

The United Nations Security Council voted on Tuesday to hold a rare meeting in Africa next month to try to focus international attention on the crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region. It will be the first time the Security Council has held a formal meeting outside UN headquarters in New York since a gathering in Panama in 1973.

Sudan’s health minister has announced an Aids-free policy will be applied to African Union troops, tasked with monitoring a ceasefire deal in crisis-hit Darfur, who have earned a steamy reputation for assiduous off-duty mingling. He said the measure is purely precautionary and aimed at ”safeguarding the health of the people of Darfur”.

A marathon public inquiry into Kenya’s biggest financial scandal was suspended on Tuesday amid a legal row over the ejection of two lawyers representing the state. The suspension was announced on the 282nd day of hearings by Peter le Pelley, one of three judges presiding over the Goldenberg inquiry.

Two people have died of cholera in the West African nation of Senegal’s capital, while 82 others have contracted the waterborne disease, the health minister said on Tuesday. In comments broadcast on state radio, Issa Mbaye Samb called on Dakar residents to observe basic hygienic practices.

Diners in a small town in central Italy went a step beyond the vision of bulls in china shops when they witnessed a furious bull storming into their restaurant. According to media reports on Tuesday, the bull horned open the front door of the La Divina restaurant, in the town of San Vittore del Lazio, and then charged its tables, causing panic.
