Roman Catholic and Protestant religious leaders in the troubled eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday warned their congregations against a ”spirit of division and tribalism”. There have been persistent reports that neighbouring Rwanda has sent its soldiers across the border to deal with Hutu extremist rebels in the DRC.

Only one percent of heavy vehicles travelling on the N4 toll route are overloaded, compared with 30% before 1998, the latest issue of Transport World Africa magazine reports. During this time, Trans African Concessions has had a R3-billion concession contract to design, construct, rehabilitate, finance, operate, maintain and expand the N4 from west of Witbank to Maputo as a toll road.

Although United States companies operating in South Africa were more positive about the local economy, there was now more concern over forced local equity than crime, a survey revealed on Sunday. Black economic empowerment ”negatively affected investment decisions” according to an overwhelming 74% of respondents surveyed by the American Chamber of Commerce in SA.

Upgraded banknotes with improved security features will be issued from February 1 next year, the South African Reserve Bank said on Monday. This follows the introduction of a new bi-metal R5 coin on August 2 this year. The coin has a bronze-coloured centre and a silver-coloured border.

At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured on Sunday when a large explosion ripped through a Christmas market in the southern Philippine city of General Santos. Shoppers fled in panic when the apparently home-made device destroyed the stall it was thought to be hidden in and wrecked most of the surrounding area.

Funny how women view cars so differently from men. With many men, it’s a kind of testosterone thing. With women, it’s often a kind of ”will-it-get-me-home-in-the-dark-without-packing-up-suddenly” thing. So it’s quite interesting to view the selection of finalists chosen by this year’s South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ jury for Car Of The Year.
