UN scales down Horn peace mission

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (Unmee) began scaling down the size of its force this week, a spokesperson announced. On September 14, the UN Security Council extended Unmee’s mandate until March next year but called for a reduction in its size, so as to reduce its annual budget of around -million.

Paramilitary leader killed in Zanzibar

The commander of a paramilitary group backed by Zanzibar’s ruling party was stabbed to death following several days of violence related to voter registration on the semi-autonomous archipelago, police said Friday. An unidentified assailant killed Ayoub Mohammed Suleiman, the commander of the Volunteer Group on the northern island of Pemba, on Thursday night in the main town of Chake Chake, said police commander Faraji Kayuga.

Resources lead JSE lower

The JSE Securities Exchange was weaker in noon trade on Friday, with lower commodity prices sending heavyweight resources stocks tumbling. Profit taking was also seen in some of the industrials and financials that enjoyed a strong run earlier in the week.

Chissano bids adieu after 42 years

Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, who is stepping down after 42 years in politics and at the forefront of a liberation struggle against Portuguese rule, says although he wants to ”be free” now, he will be on call to help resolve ”terrible problems” anywhere in the world.

Enviro Vision sees rain ahead

Short-term outlooks are relatively favourable with the best chance for good rainfalls over the period December 6 to December 8, 2004 in South Africa’s maize belt, consultant Enviro Vision said in a statement said on Thursday. Regarding the size of the coming 2004/05 commercial maize crop, Enviro Vision put the crop at about 10 million tonnes, from the previous season’s 9,5 million tonnes.

Typhoons claim 753, with 345 missing

Philippine rescuers have recovered 753 bodies following this week’s storms in the northeast of the country, and 345 people are still missing, a military spokesman said Friday. The latest casualties were caused by Typhoon Nanmadol which passed through the northeast on Thursday. The civil defence office in Manila said the typhoon killed 35 people and left 13 others missing.
