Uganda is ready to ask the International Criminal Court (ICC) to abandon its investigation in the war-ravaged north of the country if rebels there show a credible commitment to peace. The announcement came a day after President Yoweri Museveni declared a week-long halt to military operations against Lord’s Resistance Army rebels.

Beavers found a bag of bills stolen from a casino, tore it open and wove the money into the sticks and brush of their dam on a creek near Baton Rouge. ”They hadn’t torn the bills up. They were still whole,” said Major Michael Martin of the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Nigerian police on Monday took over a popular bus station in the economic capital, Lagos, to forestall a repeat of last week’s clashes between commercial drivers and traffic officials that left two dead. Drivers clashed with officials of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency for several days last week over the control of the popular CMS bus station.

A clinical psychologist has described Pretoria’s high-security C-Max prison as ”inhumane, depressing, debilitating and destructive”. Dr Jurgens van Olselen on Monday testified in the Pretoria High Court trial of a convicted murderer who is claiming R500 000 in damages for allegedly being sent unlawfully to C-Max.

Three police officers appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Monday on charges of theft, defeating the ends of justice and assault — while a fourth was arrested on similar charges. The trio — a captain and two inspectors — were arrested on Friday after an investigation into the theft of stolen funds.

Colin Powell has resigned as American Secretary of State, the department said on Monday. Powell (67), a former general, submitted his resignation to President George Bush on Friday, a senior department official said. The White House will announce the resignations of four members of Bush’s Cabinet on Monday, a spokesperson said.

Côte d’Ivoire rebel leader Guillame Soro will visit South Africa soon to discuss with President Thabo Mbeki solutions to the Ivorian civil war, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Monday. The United Nations Security Council is currently considering imposing financial and movement sanctions on Côte d’Ivoire.
