United States President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair committed themselves to seeking a viable Palestinian state on Friday, but only if the new leadership committed itself to democracy and the rule of law. Though Bush was lavish in his praise of Blair as a "statesman and a friend", and promised to commit some political "capital of the United States" to build a Palestinian state, the leaders’ statements were notably low on specifics.

The United States government on Friday ordered airlines to turn over personal information about passengers who flew within the US in June in order to test a new system for identifying potential terrorists. The system, dubbed ”Secure Flight,” will compare passenger data with names on two government watch lists.

A salvage team is removing all movable items, panelling and fittings from the wrecked ship BBC China, the ship’s joint response committee said on Friday. The team finished recovering all major pollutants from the wreck on Wednesday, and is now focused on stripping the accommodation section of the ship.

Burundian President Domitien Ndayizeye appointed Frederic Ngenzebuhoro (52) on Thursday as his a new vice-president to replace the dismissed Alphonse Marie Kadege. Ndayizeye made the appointment following a session of the Senate and the National Assembly, during which 196 MPs endorsed the choice of Ngenzebuhoro.
