Sadtu dispute could affect matric exams

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) has warned that the marking of matric exams and the opening of schools in January next year will be adversely affected after declaring a dispute with the Department of Education on Wednesday. This followed a deadlock in Wednesday’s meeting of the Education Labour Relations Council.

Zim envoy speaks on food aid, Bennett

Zimbabwe’s silos ”are full”, and the country has enjoyed ”a wonderful harvest” in the last year, the country’s ambassador to South Africa, Simon Khaya Moyo, told the National Assembly’s foreign affairs portfolio committee on Wednesday. Moyo would not comment on the jail sentence of opposition MP Roy Bennett.

Race for South African banks hots up

The race by foreign banks for a chunk of the South African banking pie appears to be hotting up. The bid by United Kingdom banking group Barclays plc for Absa seems to be gaining momentum, and emerging-market banking group Standard Chartered has reiterated its intention to garner a bigger slice of the South African market.

First foreign witness testifies in Shaik trial

John Dover, from the United Kingdom, said he met Shaik when he was based in South Africa for Symbol Technologies.

Sex aid supplements found to contain Viagra

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday banned the import of two male sexual stimulant diet supplements sold on the internet, saying they contain an undeclared prescription drug ingredient. It said the products were found to contain prescription-strength quantities of sildenafil … the active drug ingredient in Viagra.”

Palazzolo: Attorney linked to W Cape Mafia

A top police officer said on Wednesday he stands by a document in which he listed Cape Town attorney Harry Snitcher as part of the Mafia’s organisation in the Western Cape. Captain Piet Viljoen was testifying in proceedings in which Italian prosecutors are questioning witnesses on the affairs of alleged Mafioso Vito Palazzolo.
