Chelsea impress as Champions League starts

Chelsea coasted to a 3-0 win off two Didier Drogba goals, Arsenal needed an own-goal for victory and defending champion FC Porto were held to a 0-0 draw on the opening night of the Champions League season. Chelsea had the most comfortable win of the night at Paris Saint-Germain as Jose Mourinho continued his European success.

Eastern Province name new cricket coach

The Eastern Province Amateur Cricket Board announced on Tuesday that it has cut all ties with Kepler Wessels and named Russell Domingo as the amateur team coach for the 2004/05 season. The Jumbos Cricket board has reached an agreement with Wessels and will honour his contract, which was due to expire at the end of this season.

Renault drop Trulli, eye Villeneuve

The Renault formula-one team have parted company with Italian driver Jarno Trulli, the French outfit said on Tuesday, with three races in the 2004 world championship still to go. ”We have reached an agreement for Jacques [Villeneuve] to test for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday,” said team boss Flavio Briatore.

Anglo plans R26-billion for SA

Anglo American plans to invest about R26-billion in South Africa, demonstrating its confidence in the country, the company said on Tuesday following a weekend spat with President Thabo Mbeki. ”Anglo … has reinvested over R100-billion in this country since January 1999,” said Anglo spokesperson Michael Spicer in a statement.

MPs told of self-extinguishing cigarettes

A new draft Bill, which will govern the tobacco industry, will grant the minister of health the power to issue regulations on the performance standard that all cigarettes sold in South Africa will have to meet, a top official told MPs on Tuesday. A cigarette will be required to ”self-extinguish after a few minutes if it is not puffed upon”.

Israeli ministers approve Gaza compensation

Israeli ministers approved a compensation package on Tuesday for settlers due to be uprooted from their homes as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon rejected calls to submit his Gaza pull-out plan to a referendum. The meeting represents the first concrete step towards the implementation of the so-called disengagement plan.

Authorities in southern states of the United States on Tuesday urged residents to evacuate low-lying coastal areas, including New Orleans, as ferocious Hurricane Ivan barrelled across the Gulf of Mexico towards land. Tens of thousands of people were told to leave their homes for safer ground ahead of Ivan’s anticipated US landfall.

Pygmies retract DRC cannibalism claim

The Twa from the north-eastern district of Ituri, in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Orientale province, retracted on Monday statements they made in 2003 of having witnessed acts of cannibalism against their people by a former rebel group, the Mouvement de Liberation du Congo.
