Philippe Troussier sacked by Qatar

Qatar coach Philippe Troussier was sacked on Tuesday, paying the price for his team’s disastrous start to the Asian Cup. The experienced Frenchman, who saw Qatar crash to a shock 2-1 defeat against Indonesia on Sunday, had already announced his decision to step down after the tournament.

Pirates introduce new coach

Orlando Pirates introduced Kosta Papic on Tuesday as the new head coach for the Buccaneers, who have not had a mentor since Roy Barretto left last October. The chairperson of Pirates, Dr Irvin Khoza, described Papic as a vastly experienced and knowledgeable manager of the modern game.

How to plug the pension fund hole in treasury

If growth in the assets of the Public Investment Commissioners, which manages public sector pension funds, continues at more than 16,5% a year, it will completely dominate the South African economy in the next 12 years, to the detriment of social spending. ”If growth is to be halted, there are a number of options,” says Gavan Duffy of the Alternative Information and Development Centre.

All Blacks tweak team ahead of Springbok Test

New Zealand made two changes to its starting XV for Saturday’s Tri-Nations rugby union Test against South Africa at Christchurch from the line-up that beat Australia last weekend. Greg Somerville replaced Carl Hayman at tighthead prop and rugged Jerry Collins was selected on the blindside flank in place of the injured Jono Gibbes in the line-up announced on Tuesday.

Everton brace for Rooney sale

Everton are braced to sell Wayne Rooney to Manchester United when the teenage striker returns from his Caribbean holiday this week. Goodison Park director Paul Gregg admitted it is ”incredibly sad” that the club has to even think about offloading their 18-year-old superstar.

New refs’ committee chosen after arrests

The South African Football Association has appointed a new referees’ technical committee following the arrest of some top referees and club officials by the police on allegations of match-fixing and bribery. The committee is tasked to appoint referees and assistants for the Premiership and First Division matches.
