Zim cricket rebels in crisis talks

Lawyers representing the Zimbabwe Cricket Union and 15 striking white players were in exploratory talks in Harare on Thursday to see if there is any way to break the three-month impasse caused by the sacking of captain Heath Streak. The International Cricket Council gave the union and players 14 days from June 30 to find a solution.

Yellow for Armstrong in France

Five-time winner Lance Armstrong pulled on the Tour de France yellow jersey for the first time in the race after a blistering time trial performance by his United States Postal team over 64,5 km between Cambrai and Arras in France on Wednesday. US Postal were the winners of the team event last year.

Mozambique hunts lions after attacks

Police in northern Mozambique have enlisted the help of local hunters to kill lions and other wild animals following a recent spate of attacks on locals, a spokesperson said on Wednesday. ”The populations of these areas have lived in an atmosphere of fear because of the high presence of wild animals out of control,” police said.

SABC denies forcing out CEO

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board has again denied reports that it is putting pressure on chief executive Peter Matlare to resign and disputed that there is a rift between him and the head of news, chairperson Eddie Funde said on Wednesday. ”We reject with contempt sloppy journalism,” Funde said.

No genocide in Sudan, says AU

The African Union pressed Sudan on Wednesday to ”neutralise” the Janjaweed militiamen and others involved in massive human rights violations in the Darfur region, but said it does not consider the attrocities to be genocide. Thousands have been killed by Arab militiamen in Darfur, an Iraq-sized region in western Sudan.
