Players return to bolster Bok squad

Jake White’s triumphant Springbok squad is set to be bolstered by the return of three fit-again players for the one-off Test against Wales in Pretoria next Saturday. After securing a stunning 2-0 series win over the Irish with an emphatic 26-17 win in the second Test at Newlands on Saturday, White is to reacquire the services of utility forward Joe van Niekerk, centre Jean de Villiers and prop Faan Rautenbach.

What Africans want

A third of Africans feel worse off this year than last — and half feel the world is going in the wrong direction, according to a survey of nearly 8 000 Africans published last week. The survey shows that Africans feel their countries are not run by the will of the people, have more trust in their churches and religious leaders, and hold their governments accountable for solving their most important national problems.

Baasskap in new clothes?

Suddenly, the favoured way of talking about South Africa’s poor and marginalised is to call them members of the ”second economy”. Politicians and those aligned with the government now frequently refer to a modern, wealthy formal ”first economy”. The first is then contrasted with the second. The trouble with such dualism is that its use is limited and — because it may be imperfectly understood or misused — dangerous.

Black Stars punish Bafana

Bafana Bafana had a day they would rather forget at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Sunday where they were easily beaten 3-0 by a rampant Ghana on a bumpy pitch. Ghana lead 1-0 at half-time. It was the Black Stars first win over South Africa. This was the sixth time the teams have played each other.

Bulgaria may be perfect remedy for Italy’s woes

Bulgaria may be just the opponent Italy needs in its final group match. The ”Azzurri” are hobbling with injuries and hampered by suspensions, bans and squabbles with the media heading into Tuesday’s game in Guimaraes. But even without star playmaker Francesco Totti, captain and defender Fabio Cannavaro and midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Cristiano Zanetti, Italy is a big favourite.
