Bush Bucks name new coach

Bush Bucks on Wednesday unveiled Zimbabwean Sunday Marimo as their new head coach. However, Marimo will only start his new job on August 30. The former Zimbabwe national coach is still awaiting a work permit. The appointment of Marimo was confirmed by the Eastern Cape side’s communications director.

Eriksson awaits sex-scandal decision

With World Cup qualifying games just a month away, England will be looking for a new coach if the Football Association (FA) decides to fire Sven-Goran Eriksson on Thursday. The FA has been thrown into crisis after revelations that Eriksson and the organisation’s chief executive both had affairs with a 38-year-old FA secretary.

All Blacks signal out Smith as dangerman

The All Blacks have signalled out dreadlocked Wallaby flanker George Smith as a significant threat in Saturday’s Tri-Nations rugby Test with Australia. Smith did not start in the Wallaby pack in the 16-7 loss to New Zealand in atrociously wet conditions in Wellington on July 17 but he made a significant impact for Australia in it’s match against South Africa last weekend.

Bruce Springsteen, the Dixie Chicks and a score of other top musical acts have joined forces for a series of nationwide shows to help oust President George Bush from the White House. The week-long set of concert dates, beginning on October 1, targets key battleground states that are expected to go to the wire on election day, November 2.

Bird-flu fears grip Cape ostrich industry

A suspected outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) in the Eastern Cape province has halted all movement of ostriches to the Western Cape until a confirmed diagnosis has been made regarding the cause of serious mortalities at three ostrich farms in the Cradock-Somerset East region of the Eastern Cape.

Israel launches Gaza air strike

The Israeli military stepped up its campaign to put an end to rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip by sending reinforcements to the north of the territory and carrying out an air strike in the area on Wednesday. Three Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli helicopter strike near Jabaliya refugee camp, medical and security sources said.

Wage deal struck in auto industry

More than 20 000 workers are to get average wage hikes of 7,5% thanks to a deal signed by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and the Automobile Manufacturers Employers’ Organisation. The agreement was signed in Pretoria after three months’ negotiations.
