Zero tolerance for warring Cape taxis

Cape Town’s traffic and city police will apply the full force of the law in dealing with taxi violence, councillor Danile Landingwe said on Thursday. Landingwe said the city will take a ”zero tolerance” stance, following meetings with representatives from taxi organisations this week to discuss outbreaks of violence in the industry.

Flooded Bangladesh calls for help

Bangladesh has called for international help to rebuild the flood-ravaged country as the country’s death toll from the monsoon deluge reached 500 on Thursday, officials said. Almost half of Bangladesh’s 130-million population has been displaced by one of the worst seasonal floods to hit the country in decades.

‘Al-Qaeda’ warns of ‘bloody war’ in Europe

A purported al-Qaeda statement posted on an Islamist website threatened Europe with a ”bloody war” following the expiry of a July 15 deadline set by Osama bin Laden for European states to pull troops out of Muslim countries. ”Today, we declare a bloody war on you. We will not stop our raids until you return to reason,” said the statement.

Gold stocks shine on positive JSE

Gold stocks were a feature on the JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) in noon trade on Thursday, which was in the black due to demand for gold and other resources stocks. A weakening in the rand also added to the positive picture. By noon, the all-share index was up 0,37%. Resources climbed 0,83% and the gold mining index surged 3,13%.

The African National Congress won a by-election in Umtata on Wednesday — the fifth upset victory by the party in the past few weeks — over General Bantu Holomisa’s United Democratic Movement. In other by-elections on Wednesday, the Democratic Alliance snatched a municipal ward in Somerset East from the ANC.

AU mulls bringing Janjaweed to heel

The African Union has said it may transform its protection force into a ”fully-fledged peacekeeping mission” in Sudan’s Darfur region to force the government-backed Janjaweed militia to lay down its arms in line with a ceasefire deal. The pan-African body is already planning to send some 300 troops to Darfur by the end of July to protect its team of observers and monitors overseeing the implementation of a shaky ceasefire deal.
