Chelsea shopping spree comes to an end

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has declared an end to the London club’s summer shopping spree after Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho became the final piece in manager Jose Mourinho’s 24-man jigsaw. The 26-year-old signed a three-year contract after the Premiership side agreed a fee of €30-million with Porto.

SA canoeists aim to improve medal haul

The South African canoeing team to the Marathon World Championships have started assembling in the Norwegian city of Bergen, with every intention of bettering their massive medal haul from last year’s event in Spain. Capetonian Ant Stott is fiercely determined to improve on the bronze medal that he won at last year’s World Championships.

A question of belonging

I have grown rather fond of my name over the past 26 and a half years. I have painstakingly crayoned it on every exercise book, spelt it in block capitals on every official form, been secretly proud to see it there, printed on my first business cards. Women are not required to relinquish their maiden name when they get married. So why do some opt to take on their man’s name?

US officer in first Iraq murder trial

The first United States soldier charged with murder in Iraq is maintaining his innocence as he faces hearings that could lead to his court-martial for the shooting of a man during the hunt for Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. Captain Rogelio M Maynulet (29) is due to appear on Wednesday before a US military court in Hanau, outside Frankfurt.
