Girls will be boys

See also sissy boy.” — Webster Dictionary, 1913. It is a long time ago. And the early 1980s in South Africa were also a very long time ago if you consider what was — not just socially, but legally — due to women.

Electricity crisis worsens in Rwanda

In recent months, Rwanda has experienced long, daily power cuts because of electricity rationing. This began after two of the country’s hydroelectric plants, Ntaruka and Mukunga, which are responsible for providing half of Rwanda’s power, experienced drops in yield. Butcheries, delicatessens and fishmongers and beauty salons are among the businesses that have been most seriously affected.

The poor and the poorest

New research by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) has shown that 57% of South Africans are living below the poverty line of R1 290 a month for a family of four. And the ”poverty gap”, which measures the required income transfer to all poor households to lift them from poverty, grew from R56-billion in 1996 to R81-billion in 2001.

India dismiss Bangladesh in Asia Cup

Left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan and Sachin Tendulkar snared three wickets each on Wednesday to help India dismiss Bangladesh for 177 runs in the first match of the cricket Asia Cup second round. Electing to field first after winning the toss, India took immediate control of the match, claiming two wickets before the runs total passed 10 runs.

Leopards sign Matshitse

Black Leopards have started preparing themselves for the 2004/05 season by signing defender Peter Matshitse. The well-travelled Matshitse has signed a two-year contract with the Limpopo side who are under the watchful eye of former Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba.

Cox on the ball in China

South Africa’s cycling team leader, Ryan Cox, has moved up to fifth overall following the fourth stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China on Tuesday. Cox is still suffering from a stomach problem but he is only seconds off the lead. In fact, the first 10 riders in the tour are only separated by 40 seconds.

Young pro golfer sticks to his game plan

Two years ago, Ernie Els sat down with young black golfer James Kamte and the world number two gave him a very definite plan for his career. Kamte arrived at the Lost City Golf Club on Tuesday for this week’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour at Sun City with everything indicating Els’ words are still the blueprint for his fledgling career.

South African rugby bosses on Wednesday insisted a player contract row was not a distraction ahead of their opening Tri-Nations rugby test against the All Blacks here on Saturday. White was doing his utmost to put the dispute raging between the South African Rugby Union and the South African Players Association into the background this week.

Pakistan crash to record low

Pakistan opened their Asia Cup super league campaign on a disastrous note when they crashed to their lowest-to-date total of 122 against Sri Lanka at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. All-rounder Abdul Razzaq top-scored with 43, but Pakistan still fell below their previous lowest of 131 against Sri Lanka.
