Prison warders embark on strike

Warders at the medium-security prison and the C-Max prison in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal, as well as warders at St Alban’s prison outside Port Elizabeth, have embarked on a strike, SABC Radio News reported on Saturday. The warders were reportedly demonstrating outside the prisons.

New Zealand on verge of final

New Zealand all but booked themselves a place in the NatWest Series final with a five-wicket win against the West Indies at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Saturday. Only a freak combination of results can now deny Stephen Fleming’s men a place in the July 10 Lord’s showpiece of this one-day international triangular event.

Blue Bulls victory at Loftus

The Blue Bulls kicked off their defence of the Currie Cup in convincing fashion at Loftus on Saturday, beating the SWD Eagles 75-10. The champions led 29-10 at the break and never looked like losing this one. The Bulls, who secured their bonus point in the first half, scored 11 tries.

WP annihilate Pumas

Western Province (WP) kicked off their Currie Cup campaign in style as they thrashed the Pumas 44-18 at Newlands on Saturday evening. Veteran left wing Pieter Rossouw scored two tries, but young scrumhalf Tertius Carse was the man who raised the eyebrows on his Currie Cup debut.

Federer still number one

Roger Federer overcame Andy Roddick’s brute power game on Sunday to win his second straight Wimbledon title and cement his status as the game’s number-one player. The top-seeded Swiss star withstood Roddick’s huge serves and forehand winners, winning 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-4 for his third Grand Slam title.

Rwanda reopens DRC border

Rwanda on Saturday reopened its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a bid to ease tension that brought fear of renewed war between the two neighbours and led to the sealing of the frontier. President Paul Kagame and the DRC’s President Joseph Kabila held talks in Nigeria on June 25 in a bid to ease tensions.
