An unhappy divided moment

Those who don’t understand why the United Democratic Movement had to impose a R250 000 penalty on any elected official defecting from the party have probably never phoned its leader, Bantu Holomisa. Also, the manne were pleased to hear that — contrary to public perception — there is nothing to worry about in terms of the environment.

Bok coach puts pen to paper

Jake White was officially recognised as the Springbok rugby coach on Wednesday evening when he finally put pen to paper to sign his long-awaited contract. White’s contract has been extended to May 31 2006 and contains a performance clause — the first Bok coach to have such a clause inserted in his contract.

Henman finds comfort in defeat

Tim Henman was still smiling despite his shock second-round exit at the Queen’s Club ATP event on Wednesday after he announced he is going to be a father for the second time. The 29-year-old British number one said that he and his wife, Lucy, are expecting their second child in December.

Streak puts his troubles behind him

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak enjoyed a stunning debut for Warwickshire on Wednesday when he took seven wickets on the opening day of the English county championship match against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston. Streak has been out of cricket since being sacked by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union in April.

Pirates beat Ajax 3-1

A brace by Benedict Vilakazi saw Orlando Pirates beat Ajax Cape Town 3-1 in a Castle Premiership match at Newlands Stadium on Wednesday night. Ajax led 1-0 at the interval. This was supposed to be a showpiece but it turned out to be a vicious affair.

Wits University showed new Castle Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs little respect when the teams drew 1-1 in an entertaining final league match of the season played at the FNB stadium on Wednesday night. With nothing at stake both teams played open attractive football.

There was uproar last year when the popular race was thrown off the calendar to make way for new venues in Bahrain and China.

Cape Town ready to unite for Olympic flame

It’s all systems go for Cape Town’s Olympic torch relay on Saturday, officials say. The city that lost to Athens in the bid for the 2004 games is staging an event that will involve a range of distinguished South Africans, including Nelson Mandela, and see the flame travel across the city by foot, cable car and helicopter.
