Sheryl Ozinsky quits Cape Town tourism

Sheryl Ozinsky, one of South Africa’s best known tourism players, has resigned from the board of Cape Town Tourism. The board confirmed her resignation in a statement on Saturday, saying that Ozinsky was ”seeking challenges that will enable her to use her passion, experience and energy in tourism marketing”.

Missing SA diplomat found

Missing South African diplomat Nicky Scholtz has been found, apparently unharmed, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday. Malaysia’s Sunday Mail newspaper reported that the police investigation centred on Scholtz’s personal life including a possible love tryst.

Saudi horror sparks fears of oil crisis

Oil prices are set to surge after al-Qaeda gunmen seized 50 foreign hostages during a rampage that left the Saudi Arabian city of Khobar littered with bodies, bullet-riddled buildings and cars. At least 10 people died, including a South African, in the crisis that ended after Saudi security officials surrounded the attackers and captured their leader.

Woeful Zimbabwe killed by Australia

Michael Clarke’s maiden international century steered Australia to an easy eight-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the third one-day cricket match at Harare Sports Club on Saturday. His belligerent 105 not out in 102 balls helped Australia wrap up the series of three token matches 3-0 without the need to raise their game.

Ajax beat Leopards in 3-2 thriller

Ajax Cape Town enjoyed a 3-2 win over Black Leopards in an intense Premier Soccer League match at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday. The win for the Capetoninans, however, was not good enough to ensure they remained in the championships battle after Kaiser Chiefs scooped the title by beating Moroka Swallows 2-0 at Johannesburg Stadium.

Twelve years on, Amakhosi finally clinch it

Finally, Kaizer Chiefs have been crowned the Castle Premiership champions. The Glamour Boys from Phefeni achieved the feat after registering a hard fought 2-0 victory over Moroka Swallows. The league title has eluded AmaKhosi for the past 12 years and the victory has booked them a place in the African Champions League.

Row erupts over Aristide’s plane fare

Two days before ousted Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide and his family are to leave for temporary asylum in South Africa, it is still unclear who will pay the plane fare. Reports on Friday said the Jamaican and South African governments are arguing over who would pay to fly Aristide, his wife Mildred and their security.

No respite for Table Mountain’s tahrs

South African National Parks (SANParks) has refused to place a moratorium on the shooting of Table Mountain’s tahrs, the National Council of SPCAs said on Friday. In a statement issued after a meeting with SANParks on Friday, the NSPCA said however, it had been agreed that NSPCA representatives would observe the culling.
