Nigerian team snatch a place in league

Title holders Enyimba of Nigeria scored a late goal to pip Petro Atletico 2-1 in Angola and snatch a place in the group phase of the African Champions League on Sunday. Diminutive David Tyakase struck the crucial goal with four minutes left at the Citadela Stadium after the visitors led 1-0 at half-time.

Roberto Carlos wants four years at Real

Real Madrid’s Brazil defender Roberto Carlos on Sunday confirmed his wish to sign a new four-year contract and not the two-year deal currently on the table, O Globo newspaper reported on Sunday. Roberto Carlos is in Rio de Janeiro preparing for Brazil’s South American 2006 World Cup qualifier against Argentina.

SA won’t bid for Nations Cup finals

The South African Football Association (Safa) on Sunday confirmed that the federation has withdrawn from bidding to host the 2008 African Nations Cup finals. According to Safa president Molefi Oliphant, it will not be a good idea for South Africa to go ahead with its plans of hosting the continental showpiece.

King of Clay is back

Three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil rolled back the years in Paris on Monday when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The Brazilian reigned supreme as ”King of Clay” for five years before undergoing hip surgery two years ago.

South African rugby boss quits

Songezo Nayo, the managing director of the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu), has resigned. The resignation on Monday follows the advice of the chairperson of the board of directors of SA Rugby, Dr Theunie Lategan, that there was a ”breakdown of the trust relationship between Nayo … and the presidents of Sarfu”.

Schumacher back on top

World champion Michael Schumacher restored formula one to normal order in Germany on Sunday when he won the European Grand Prix at a canter as Ferrari claimed their fourth one-two of the season. Schumacher was beaten for the first time this season in last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Hellenic end Arrows’ top-eight dreams

Hellenic shattered Golden Arrows’ dreams of finishing among the top eight teams in the Castle Premiership table when they beat them 4-1 in their final league game played at Kings Park soccer stadium on Sunday afternoon. Thabo Mabaso opened the score in the 16th minute after receiving a neat pass from Thulas Gaoshubelwe.

Downs end on a high

Sundowns ended a disappointing Premier Soccer League season on a high note when they defeated Jomo Cosmos 1-0 in their final Castle Premiership fixture of the 2003/04 season at the Rand stadium on Sunday. Veteran striker Daniel Mudau scored the only goal of the match in the opening minute.
