Songezo Nayo, the managing director of the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu), has resigned.
The resignation on Monday follows the advice of the chairperson of the board of directors of SA Rugby, Dr Theunie Lategan, that there was a ”breakdown of the trust relationship between Nayo on the one hand and the presidents of Sarfu on the other”.
”A trust relationship between the managing director of SA Rugby and the presidents of Sarfu is crucial for the stability of the game,” said Nayo.
”Given this breakdown in the trust relationship between myself and the three gentlemen, I believe it to be in the best interest of the administration of the game that I step down.”
Lategan informed Nayo of his assessment — that there has been a breakdown of the trust relationship between the two parties — after a meeting between him and Brian van Rooyen last Friday.
”It was clear to me from the meeting that the trust relationship crucial for good relations in the senior leadership of rugby had broken down completely between Mr Nayo and the three gentlemen,” said Lategan.
”It is my view that Mr Nayo’s resignation is the most effective way of dealing with the situation.”
The board of SA Rugby has accepted Nayo’s resignation and thanked him for his contribution to SA Rugby over a number of years. — Sapa
